RNA – The Office for the Inquiry of Religious Questions of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, published the following ruling on the fast of Ramadhan during the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) outbreak according to his fatwas.
The text of the question and answer is as follows:
Question: What is the ruling on fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan given the current situation where the Coronavirus has spread?
Answer: In fact, fasting as a divine duty is a special blessing of God for the servants and is one of the foundations of spiritual development and upliftment of mankind and it was also made obligatory on the previous nations.
Among the effects of fasting is the emergence of spirituality and inner purity, individual and social piety, the strengthening of one’s will and a spirit of resistance against hardships. The role of fasting in the health of the human body is clear and God has declared a great reward for those who fast.
Fasting is one of the obligations of the religion of Islam and among the pillars of Islamic law and it is not permissible to abstain from fasting during the holy month of Ramadhan unless one rationally thinks that fasting will cause:
1) An illness
2) An exacerbation of an illness
3) The lengthening of an illness and the delay of the recovery of one’s health.
In these cases, fasting is void but it is necessary to make up for it.
Obviously, this statement will suffice if this is confirmed by a religious medical specialist.
Therefore, if a person has fears and worries about the above-mentioned matters and this fear has a rational origin, fasting is abrogated, but it is necessary to make up for it.
