RNA – On April 29th, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, donated approximately 4.5 billion rials ($27,658 US at today’s rate) to help free prisoners of unintentional crimes, according to the managing-general of Iran’s Diya Headquarters.
Asadollah Joulayei said that as the Coronavirus pandemic continues in the country, charity ceremonies to collect money for unintentional crime prisoners, regularly held every year during the holy month of Ramadan, were not held this year.
He, however, noted that this tradition was not neglected and the donations were collected online.
Ayatollah Khamenei have donated some 25 billion rials ($153,657 US at today’s rate) to unintentional crime prisoners over the past decade which has helped release more than 700 prisoners who were serving their prison terms because of diya (blood money) sentences due to traffic accidents, the official said.
