Rasa News Agency - On July 22, Dr Ali Larijani, speaker of the Parliament of Iran, in a meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Mohammad-Jihad al-Lahham condemned the international silence in regards to the crimes currently being committed by the Israeli occupation against the innocent people of the Gaza Strip. Both parties called on Islamic countries to make important decisions to support the Palestinian people against the aggression of the Zionist state.
Dr Larijani appreciated Mr al-Lahham’s presence at the Presidential Troika meeting, where the heads of the parliaments of various Islamic countries will meet to discuss the Zionist regime’s ongoing onslaught against the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip. Heads of the parliaments of Mali, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Pakistan and Turkey will take part in the emergency summit, which is scheduled to convene in the Iranian capital on Tuesday. The chairman of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), Salim Zanoun, will also participate in the one-day event.
The meeting was held due to the efforts of Dr Larijani who invited the Presidential Troika of the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation Member States’ (PUIC) to an emergency meeting over the deadly Israeli air raids on the blockaded Gaza Strip. The PUIC Presidential Troika consists of the previous, current, and future presidents of the PUIC Conference, which is currently presided by Iran.
Dr Larijani told Mr al-Lahham: “Syria has always been an important part of the axis of resistance against the Zionist regime, and the presence of high-ranking Syrian delegation at this meeting also emphasizes its importance.”
Mr al-Lahham pointed to the situation in the region and added that countries which have supporting the terrorists in Syria are now enflaming the situation in Iraq. This shows that they are concerned about their own situation.
In another part of his talk with Mr al-Lahham, Dr Larijani again offered his congratulations to Bashar al-Asad on the beginning of his third term as the president of the Syrian Arab Republic. “The world powers must accept the choice of the Syrian people and stop confronting the Syrian people,” Dr Larijani said.
Dr Larijani also praised the Syrian people’s resistance against the terrorists and expressed confidence that the country will return to full tranquility and peace.
At the meeting, Mr al-Lahham also referred to the [Iranian] Islamic Consultative Assembly’s initiative to hold this crucial meeting to help the oppressed people of Gaza, and said: “Iran has always been consistent in helping the Muslims of the world, and if Muslims are suffering from problems, Iran is beside them with support and aid.”
He appreciated the moral support of Iran and described the situation in his country, saying: “The proud Syrian nation and army are not far from victory in the fight against terrorism. The Western imperialists and the state sponsors of terrorism in the region have realized their errors.”
At the end of their meeting, Mr al-Lahham referred to the tragic situation in Gaza and said: “The Zionist enemy perceived the resistance axis as weak and thus they began brutal attacks against the innocent people of Gaza but the Palestinian will again be victorious in this conflict.”
