The first ceremony mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his faithful companions was held at Imam Khomeini Husseiniya (religious center) in Tehran on Monday night, November 11, the website of the Supreme Leader’s office reported.
Senior Iranian officials and thousands of people from different walks of life attended the ceremony.
Speaker at the program elaborated on the features and objectives of the Ashura uprising and elegists recited elegies on the sad occasion.
The mourning ceremonies will be held every night until the 11th day of Muharram (Friday, November 15).
Throughout Iran, millions of people mourn the martyrdom of the Sayyid-ul-Shuhada (master of martyrs) in Muhrram.
Dressed in black, mourners take to the streets and also gather in mosques to grieve the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).
