RNA – Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem-Shirazi welcomed the inclination of Sunni youth towards Shi’a Islam and criticized certain religious centres in Egypt and Tunisia which are against this development.

Referring to the efforts of Egypt’s renowned Sunni institute of learning, al-Azhar University, to hold a conference to discuss reasons behind Sunni youths’ growing inclination towards Shi’a Islam, he criticized al-Azhar officials for being sensitive towards new religious interests among Egyptian and Tunisian youth.

Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi added that both Shi’as and Sunnis are Muslims and Egyptian and Tunisian officials should not be afraid of Shi’as but they should be afraid that their youth apostatize.
