Rasa – The head of the Iraqi Islamic Supreme Council has met with the new Australian ambassador to Iraq to discuss mutual concerns, including terrorism.

RNA – Hujjat al-Islam Sayyid Ammar al-Hakim, the president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, met with the new Australian ambassador to Iraq, Christopher Langman on Monday.

 

Langman, a career diplomat, took up his post in August.

 

Sayyid al-Hakim called for an exchange of experiences between Iraq and Australia, especially in the field of agriculture.

 

Langman was also Australia’s Special Negotiator for Agriculture from 2004 to 2005.

 

The Iraqi religious scholar and politician discussed security and political issues in Iraq and the region and the world with Canberra’s ambassador to Baghdad. They also discussed bilateral relations between the two countries and ways of developing them in all fields.

 

The head of the Iraqi Islamic Supreme Council stressed on the need for concerted efforts by all parties in order to eradicate terrorism, while Australia confirmed its commitment to strengthen relations with Iraq.

 

For his part, Langman stressed his country’s keenness to strengthen relations between Iraq and Australia and praised Sayyid al-Hakim’s serious cooperation with Ms. Lyndall Sachs, the former Australian ambassador to Iraq, in serving the interests of the two countries.
