RNA - To that end the two countries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which calls for setting up a joint committee to make necessary coordination to resume travel of Iranian pilgrims to Syria.

Head of Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization Saeed Ohadi, heading an Iranian delegation, conferred with Syrian Minister of Tourism Bashar Riyad Yazigi on Monday on regulating issues concerning pilgrims.

He also raised the issue with officials from Syrian Interior Ministry and Tourism Ministry as well as officials from tourist companies.

Senior Syrian officials promised to do their utmost to ensure safety of the pilgrims, a report by IRNA said.

Before the deadly civil war began in the Arab country, thousands of devoted Iranian Shiites made pilgrimage trips to Syria every year to visit the holy shrines of Hazrat Zeynab and Hazrat Ruqayya on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus.
