RNA - On the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr, a joyous feast which marks the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and is celebrated on the first day of the lunar-calendar month of Shawwal, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei agreed to pardon or commute prison terms of 930 eligible inmates convicted by public and revolutionary courts, the State Discretionary Punishment Organization and the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces.
The pardon was made at the request of the country's Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani and was accepted by Iran’s Leader on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr at the end of Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
Clause 11 of Article 110 of the Constitution allows pardoning or commuting prison terms of qualified convicts at the order of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
The Article does not apply to all types of convicts, especially those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the Islamic Republic, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
The first day of the month of Shawwal on the Hegira calendar is called Eid al-Fitr, which is decided when the first crescent of a new moon is sighted. During the Eid, Muslims attend communal prayers, listen to sermons and give Zakat al-Fitr or donations to the poor.
