RNA - Ayatollah Safi-Golpaygani said “All your activities should be based on service to God and the best interests of the people. If your purpose is to please God and is for the good of the people, you will be successful and the people will trust you.”

Grand Ayatollah Safi made the remarks in a meeting with Habibollah Haghighi, the director of the Centre for Combating Smuggling, and other staff members of the organization.

The revered source of emulation stated that the organization should pay attention to the commands of Islam and the religious rules in all their planning.

He stated that if we can take action to help the people overcome obstacles and difficulties in their lives, we can improve their lives and give them hope that we are committed to carrying out our religious orders, and we do not overcome these issues, things will become more difficult.

Ayatollah Safi-Golpaygani stated his concern over the illegal smuggling of other illegal goods like alcohol. “When someone hears such news, he becomes very affected and upset by it. At the beginning of the Islamic Revolution, when one of us asked about the state of our country and other countries, we said in our country, there is not even a drop of [alcohol], but in such a place, there is a lot of it. The Islamic prohibition of alcohol is a benefit for our country and we must not loose this proud accomplishment,” he said.

He also referred to the discomfort of many merchants with some of the cumbersome laws, saying: “The market must follow Islamic law, which are easy and versatile and help to advance economic prosperity. The private sector should be encouraged and cumbersome laws that cause disruption to the economic affairs of the people should be removed.”

In another part of his recommendations, Ayatollah Safi-Golpaygani addressed his guests and said: “You have responsibilities in your work, especially looking after the weak and you must consider their needs in creating and enforcing the law.”

Ayatollah-Safi Golpaygani added the importance of dealing with economic corruption, he stated that in enforcing the laws and punishments, even those who have committed minor crimes must not go unpunished and also emphasized that the laws and punishments should be` applied equally so that all people find you trustworthy and are supportive of your activities. “Those involved in economic corruption must not be able to feel safe in Iran,” he said.

At the beginning of the meeting, Mr Haghighi delivered a detailed report on the activities and future plans of the Centre for Combating Smuggling.
