RNA – Referring to a narration from the Prophet Muhammad on the importance of promoting and reviving religion, Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi stated that sometimes Islam is sometimes placed at risk and lives are endangered. At these times, religious leaders should revolt and use their knowledge of Islam to save the religion.
The renowned source of emulation explained that today, Islam faces both internal and external dangers. “In which other time has there been such television channels, satellite networks, media and open virtual networks which spread propaganda against Islam? Currently, night and day, thousands of media and websites are spreading propaganda against Islam. In such circumstances we should recognize our duties [to defend Islam].”
Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi added: “Today the branches and principles of Islam and ethics are at risk. In such circumstances, scholars and others who have the abilities to preach, must go forth and strive to promote the religion and revive it.”
His Eminence explained that some say due to the high volume of enemy propaganda, it does not have much impact on society. But we believe the impact has different degrees. Religious narrations emphasize that if the heresy appear, it is obligatory for the scholars to use their knowledge to defend the religion and they must not remain silent.
Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi warned about the risk of heresy in Shi’ite mourning rituals performed in remembrance of Imam Husayn, saying that some [dangerous] heresy have spread. His Eminence emphasized the maintenance of traditional and original mourning rituals.
In another part of his speech, Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi emphasized the importance of the glorious Arba’in march which has recently begun in Iraq. He stated that it is an unparalleled event. “The mourners for the Master of the Martyrs [Imam Husayn] walk on foot from Najaf and other Iraqi cities towards Karbala with a great clamour. This should be protected.”
In conclusion, His Eminence explained that we should careful lest those with innovative and wrongful programs question these great traditions. Mourning for Imam Husayn is a great cause which can be used beneficially. “This cause is a great honour for us, and we believe we must protect and preserve it.”
