Shaykh Ali Gumu’ah, former grand Mufti of Egypt, said the takfir of Shi’ites (considering Shi’ites as infidels) is not acceptable.

Speaking to the Kuwaiti daily al-Ray, he also said that calling for the return of the Islamic caliphate is invalid and that such a call has nothing to do with true Islam.

He underlined that those like ISIL and al-Qaeda who hold Takfiri ideology seek sectarian discord and sedition.

Gumu’ah added that such groups know nothing about the true Islam and the fiqh (jurisprudence) and shari’ah.

“These groups have tarnished the image of Islam in the world,” he said, noting that these Takfiri groups implement the enemies’ agendas.

In recent months, Takfiri groups such as ISIL have carried out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations, against Shi’ites, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians in countries like Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.
