Addressing an international conference titled “Extremist and Takfiri Groups in View of Muslim Scholars” on Sunday, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, secretary of Iran’s Guardian Council, said Takfiri groups, like the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are rooted in Zionism and have been created with the aim of undermining the Islamic Awakening.
He described the issue of Takfirism as the Muslim world’s number one concern today and said this phenomenon threatens Islam.
“It is Muslims’ duty to confront the Zionists and Takfiris in any way they can,” Ayatollah Jannati went on to say.
The ISIL Takfiri terrorists currently control large areas of Iraq. The group sent its militants into Iraq in June, seizing large parts of land straddling the border between Syria and Iraq.
They have been carrying out horrific acts of violence, including public decapitations and crucifixions, against all communities in both neighbouring states such as Shi’ites, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians.
The “Extremist and Takfiri Groups in View of Muslim Scholars” conference kicked off Sunday morning in the holy city of Qom.
Prominent Sunni and Shi’ite Muslim scholars from 83 countries are taking part in the international event, which aims to raise awareness about different aspects of the threat of Takfir and extremism.
