Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi

Rasa News Agency reports – Ayatollah Naser Makarem-Shirazi has met with members of the Islamic Propagation Office of Khorasan-e Razavi [province] in the holy city of Mashhad. He explained how the propagation of Wahhabism among ordinary Muslims, especially Sunnis, is threat to Islam and is considered a great crime.

His Eminence stressed that for the last 1,400 years, Islam has been at the forefront of thinking, resistance and action combined with reflection but that Wahhabism and Takfirism have gone against the rational and progressive religion that is true Islam. He referred to the verse of the Holy Quran: “Say, ‘I give you just a single advice: that you rise up for God’s sake, in pairs or singly, and then reflect” [34:46] and said that all of God’s advice on rising up is contained in this verse as all important affairs can only be successfully accomplished by everyone performing their role in society with sincerity, both as a society and individually.

Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi also condemned the so-called ‘Islamic State’ and other Takfiri terrorist groups and explained that one of the greatest crimes of the various Takfiri groups is their propagation of the violent Wahhabi ideology among ordinary Sunni Muslims. He explained that there are ongoing strategies to prevent the spread of this ideology among the Sunni population of the Islamic Republic of Iran and said: “An important part of our strategy is the establishment of mosques and seminaries, especially on the outskirts of the cities, and the presence of seminarians in deprived areas and the holding of Quranic classes and classes on Quranic exegesis.”

He concluded by stating that Muslims must strive to protect Islam from the harmful influence of Wahhabism.
