In a statement, an Iraqi scholar offered his condolences on the martyrdom of a number of ‎mourners who were killed in a stampede in Karbala on the day of Ashura.‎

According to Rasa News Agency’s correspondent in Najaf,‎‏ ‏Ayatollah Muhammad al-‎Yaqoubi, a revered Najaf-based source of emulation, issued a message in which he offered ‎his condolences on the martyrdom of a number of mourners who were killed in a stampede ‎in Karbala on the day of Ashura (September 10th). ‎

At least thirty-one pilgrims lost their lives and dozens more sustained injuries in a stampede ‎during the Muslim religious rituals of Ashura in the Iraqi city of Karbala, the Iraqi Health ‎Ministry said.‎

In the message, His Eminence said, “We offer our condolences on the deaths of more than ‎thirty people and the injury of more than one-hundred mourners of Imam al-Husayn who ‎were killed during the Rakdhah al-Tuwayrij [Tuwayrij run] ceremony near the entrance of the ‎Holy Shrine of Imam al-Husayn on the day of Ashura.”‎

Ayatollah al-Yaqoubi prayed to God Almighty to grant mercy and the highest ranks to the ‎martyrs of this tragedy and for the quick healing of the wounded.‎
