RNA - Former president of al-Azhar University, saying that polygamy is not a basic principle on marriage, stated that it is a cruelty to both women and children.
Ahmad al-Tayyeb, Imam of al-Azhar, sending a message on Twitter, described polygamy as a cruelty to women, and then defined the issue of woman as a priority in the Egyptian society.
He introduced polygamy as a cruelty, not only to women, but also mainly to children. These statements created a wave of controversy on the social media used by the Egyptians.
He then added, “polygamy is not a principle of marriage, but the basic principle in this regard is that, if wives are not treated equally, polygamy will be Haram/wrong”.
It should be mentioned that the above statements were made by Sheikh al-Azhar in accordance with the policy adopted by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the president of Egypt, for changing the religious discourse of this country.
