RNA – Speaking during his class, Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, the head of the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom, referred to the historical course of the Islamic movement and the victory of the Islamic Revolution in February 1979 and said, “Almost forty years ago, a revolution took place in this country. A ruthless regime supported by all the tyrants of the world was overthrown by the late Imam [Khomeyni] and the scholars of Islam and with the assistance of the people and a government was established in the name of Islam and was accepted by the people and the clergy.”
The jurist on the Guardian Council referred to various hostile acts and plots to undermine and overthrow the Islamic Revolution and added, “Despite all the conspiracies of the enemies, we have defended, and are still defending our government, for almost forty years but this doesn’t mean there are no defects in our system.”
Referring to the possibility that there to be deficiencies in all the governments, he stated, “Is it possible to find a government that has no defects but it is not wise or logical to question the nature of that government on the pretext of the existence of one defect?”
Ayatollah Yazdi continued, “The fact is that the direction and path of our system is based on the commandments of Islam and the Quran. Islam existed only in the mosques and the seminaries before the Revolution but due to the blessings of the Revolution, it has spread throughout society, offices, government departments and institutions.”
His Eminence noted that the Revolution has been established within the Islamic seminaries with the support of clerics and scholars of Islam and emphasized the need to preserve the spirit of revolutionary education.
“We have a duty to defend the Islamic system. Since the victory of the Revolution, the clergy and seminaries, as the backers and supporters of the Revolution, must continue to defend the Islamic system with the same revolutionary spirit,” he said.
Ayatollah Yazdi criticized some whispers about the return of the Islamic Seminary to the pre-revolutionary atmosphere, saying, “Unfortunately, some clergymen say that the seminaries must return to the pre-revolutionary conditions. Their justification is that the seminaries must not be dependent on government. But are we in favour of government affiliation? Our point is that we must support the divine and popular government which was established for the revival of Islamic ordinances and traditions and for independence and freedom. On this path, the clergy have a duty to continue all the aspirations and slogans, given the religiousness of the movement and given that Imam Khomeyni started his uprising from within these same seminaries.”
The revered teacher in the Islamic Seminary of Qom explained that Islam is strong when we can execute divine ordinances and asked, “Is Islam exclusive and limited to mosques and seminaries as it existed before the Revolution? What is the guarantee of the execution of the ordinances and what is the danger for the enemies of Islam?”
He continued, “The Islamic Seminaries are the foundation of Islam and the Revolution. Certainly there was never an opportunity like the one that was provided after the victory of the Revolution for the propagation of religion and Islamic teachings and thus, the clergy must take advantage of this historic opportunity and not entertain the thought of returning to the pre-revolutionary period.”
Ayatollah Yazdi also emphasized the necessity of using the holy month of Ramadhan to explain the services of the Revolution and stated, “During these days, seminarians must familiarize the people, and especially the youth, with Islam and the Revolution more and more while explaining the sensitive domestic and foreign conditions. Of course, they must also point out the various problems and hopefully make the people hopeful for a better future.”
