RNA – Speaking during his jurisprudence class at Qom’s Grand Mosque, Grand Ayatollah Hoseyn Nouri-Hamadani referred to the an attack in Tehran on February 19th, where five members of the police and Basij volunteer forces were killed in a series of attacks by members of the Gonabadi Dervish cult and offered his condolences on the martyrdoms of the victims and called on the officials to punish the perpetrators of this crime as soon as possible.

The revered Iranian source of emulation added, “In my jurisprudential discussions regarding Islamic denominations over the past year, I have said that Sufism is a deviant sect. There are more than seventy Sufi sects, each of which excommunicates and slanders the others. The common features of these sects are that based on the narrations of the enemies of the Ahlul-Bayt. In his works, ‘Hadiqat al-Shi’ah’ and ‘Sahib al-Wasail,’ the scholar Muhaqqiq al-Ardabili (d. 1585 CE) separately expressed the deviations of these sects.”

He said, “The enemies of Islam have created such sects against the Ahlul-Bayt. Sufism is an false sect which was created to deceive people with the appearance of honour.”

Ayatollah Nouri-Hamadani continued, “By displaying a certain visage, the sect has stolen the dignity and the words of the Ahlul-Bayt and used their names in order to deceive society. There is no doubt that this sect is deviated – from beginning of Islam, the enemies of the Ahlul-Bayt have created such sects to overshadow their activities.”

The prominent professor in the Islamic Seminary of Qom expressed that one who is distant from the culture of the Ahlul-Bayt and the Quran and commits any crime do not do anything for the defense of their country and their hearts have only been delighted with seclusion, begging and the likes of these actions and their affection for the Ahlul-Bayt is only outward.”

He said, “Unfortunately, some use propaganda and concealment to cover the truth. The recent events in Tehran and the martyrdom of a number of security guards is a painful problem for which the perpetrators must be retaliated against and punished for. This is not just the killing of one person but it is ‘corruption on earth.’ We offer our congratulations to the law enforcement personnel who are always devoted to providing security for society.”

Ayatollah Nouri-Hamadani stressed that the interpretation of some of the officials, which is based on negligence and the belief that such sects are moderate, is incorrect and noted, “These sects are false, deviant and are lying. These people were not with the Islamic Revolution and they were not present during the Sacred Defense [Iran-Iraq War].”

His Eminence also warned against the danger of false mysticism in society and added, “True mysticism is expressed in theology and the words of the Ahlul-Bayt and the way towards human prosperity is following these noble individuals.”

The attack came during an unauthorized gathering by the so-called Gonabadi Dervishes near a police station in Pasdaran neighbourhood in the north of the capital Tehran on the night of February 19th.

The cult members engaged in clashes with ordinary people and police forces. One attacker ploughed a bus into a group of policemen, killing three of them. Also two members of the Basij forces lost their lives in separate car-ramming and stabbing attacks at the site.
