RNA – In a meeting with the police force commanders from the Iranian province of Gilan, Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem-Shirazi urged the officials to educate people on the religious obligation of enjoining the right and forbidding the wrong.

Narrating a hadith, the senior cleric added, “If a person makes a good tradition among people, then he or she will be rewarded by God whenever someone does that same good deed until the end of time. The same is true for those who go on and promote vice in society, it goes without saying that they will be severely punished by God whenever someone follows their wrong deeds until the end of time.”

The revered source of emulation further asserted, “In addition to being a religious duty, the act of enjoining the right and forbidding the wrong is considered as a social and logical obligation. Suppose there was no religion in the world, we would still enjoin the right and forbid the wrong in the society, since the fate of the people is interconnected and linked together as a whole, that’s why we are obliged to do it as a social responsibility.”

Ayatollah Makarem-Shirazi said, “Some think that the real purpose of this religious duty of enjoining the right and forbidding the wrong is to avoid committing sins whereas according to Islamic narrations many social issues are interwoven with it such as the issue of safety, hence its significance must not be overlooked.”
