RNA – Grand Ayatollah Jafar Sobhani, during a meeting with the vice president and a group of managers stated that the fight against narcotics is the best example for forbidding evil and added that there are two types of evil, one is damaging others’ property and other kind is that evil which destroys the human intellect.

The revered source of emulation explained that in 1960, he was in the presence of the late Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Hoseyn Tabatabaei-Boroujerdi and one of doctors of Tehran who was the head of a psychiatric hospital came to him along with a Swedish doctor and asked him some questions in regard to alcohol and jurisprudence.

“Ayatollah Boroujerdi stated that mankind’s dignity and honour was connected to human reason and alcohol was the enemy of reason. If they say that a single drop of alcohol did not harm one’s reason we should answer that is man is excessive and a single drop leads to more,” he said.

Ayatollah Sobhani argued that narcotics are like alcohol, adding: “These narcotics are harmful to the minds and nerves of society and in a society which in which reason is in decline, the youth are aloof and occupied in their own illusions and such a country cannot administer itself and can certainly become colonized by another country.”

He added that there are ten million narcotics smugglers in the world and in addition, there are economic issues behind the political issues, adding: “When the Taliban in Afghanistan were in power, there were not this many narcotics available but since the Americans have arrived in Afghanistan, the availability of narcotics has multiplied.”

The respected scholar added: “Afghanistan presents itself as a Muslim country, but a huge amount of opium is produced there and most of the opium in the world comes from this country.”

Ayatollah Sobhani said the phenomenon of addiction destroys one’s reason, understanding and honour and turns mankind into a reclusive being which is not aware of anything, except their own illusions. “In order to combat this problem, the [Iranian] Ministry of Education must cooperate and work with the government and police forces in an anti-drug campaign,” he added.
