The Democratic Party establishment in the US has rushed to rally behind former vice president Joe Biden in order to stop Bernie Sanders’ momentum and crush the economic reform movement he is promoting, says an antiwar and civil rights. RNA - Sanders is proposing massive overhauls of the US economy, including taxing the wealthiest Americans to provide free colleges and ban private health insurance in favor of a government-funded system that guarantees universal health coverage, a system already carried out by many developed countries.
Democrats are worried that Sanders’ democratic socialist proposals to restructure the US economy would doom the party to defeat in the November presidential election.
“Great pressure was brought to bear by the [Democratic] establishment to see that Bernie Sanders’ momentum would be stopped,” said Richard Becker, a coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition, a protest umbrella group consisting of many antiwar and civil rights organizations.
The party’s support for Biden comes “even though by all accounts, by all measures, Biden is a terrible candidate,” Becker told Press TV on Tuesday.
“He has a long history of racism…he supported the [Persian] Gulf war in 1991, he supported the Iraq war in 2003, the Afghanistan war,” Becker said.
Democrats are afraid of the movement that has brought millions of young American around Sanders seeking a “fundamental change in the United States,” Becker added.
Biden emerged from last week’s Super Tuesday with wins in 10 of the 14 state primaries, and he is again the Democratic front-runner with the most delegates.
His rebound was followed by endorsements of fellow candidates Michael Bloomberg, Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar after each departed the presidential race.
A Reuters/Ipsos national opinion poll carried out just two weeks ago showed Sanders was considered the most electable candidate for defeating President Donald Trump in November.
Trump on Sunday suggested that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) ordered Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) to end her candidacy after Super Tuesday to draw votes away from Sanders.
