Iranian President Hassan Rouhani condemned the US attempts to overthrow the legal government in Venezuela, reiterating his country's support for President Maduro. RNA - "We support the legal government of Mr. Maduro and believe that similar to previous plots, the Venezuelan people will foil this plot with unity and resistance alongside their government," President Rouhani said in a meeting with new Venezuelan Ambassador to Tehran Carlos Antonio Alcala Cordones on Saturday.
He warned that Washington has hatched a new plot against the Venezuelan people and government, and said, "The Americans are basically opposed to all popular revolutions and independent countries and want to take control of the world by suppressing revolutions and independent countries."
Rouhani underscored that Iran will continue development of relations with Venezuela in political, economic and investment fields.
Alcala Cordones, for his part, appreciated Iran's support for Caracas, and said, "In this new battle and plot, we are facing the global imperialism but the Venezuelan people will win this battle."
According to Fars News Agancy, at least 10 countries, including Russia, Turkey and Iran, have expressed their support for Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and condemned outside interference in Caracas.
China, which has backed Venezuela’s sovereignty, said it opposed any outside interference. Bolivia, Mexico and Cuba all supported the Venezuelan president.
Maduro ordered the closure of Venezuela’s embassy and consulates in the US after Washington threw its weight behind opposition leader Juan Guaido, who declared himself interim president.
