RNA - "We express regret over the assassination of Mohammad Jafar Tavakoli, a religious scholar from the western province of Herat," Qassemi said.

He underlined that such attacks, which have recently risen, seem to be carried out with the aim of creating division among various groups and religions sects in Afghanistan.

Qassemi, meantime, sympathized with the family of the Shiite cleric, saying the Islamic Republic remains confident that, like in the past, the vigilant Muslim nation of Afghanistan will foil the plots hatched by enemies and those who seek to divide the Afghan people.

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman also noted that the enemies will fail to break the unity of religious groups in Afghanistan.

Mohammad Jafar Tavakoli, a religious scholar in Herat, was killed by unknown gunmen in Herat.

Abdul Ahad Walizada, spokesman for Herat police, told Killid that the scholar was gunned down by armed cyclists.

Walizada added that the gunmen fled the area.

No one has so far been arrested in the connection with the incident and no group has so far claimed responsibility.
