Rasa - The European Union (EU) is well supportive of the government in Myanmar — which has been quietly condoning a brutal military crackdown on members of the Muslim Rohingya community there — and recent sanctions imposed by the bloc on individual Myanmarese police personnel amount to nothing more than an attempt at appeasing some Europe-based Muslims, says a commentator.

RNA - “The EU is trying to appease some of the Muslim population in Europe [with the sanctions], but actually, they (the European governments) are 100 percent behind the Myanmar government,” Saeb Shaath told on Tuesday.

Criticizing the bloc’s “double standard,” Shaath said the EU has long been sustaining the “criminal government” in Myanmar.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been brutally killed, raped, and tortured, and their entire communities have been bulldozed in western Myanmar. Nearly 700,000 others have survived only by fleeing to neighboring Bangladesh.

The West has been attempting to project the actions of the military as independent of the government in Naypyidaw, even as the latter has offered tacit approval for the actions of the former.
