RNA - According to the Pentagon regime, the prison is formally set to receive new inmates for an indefinite stay. In what amounts to a fulfilled campaign promise for Donald Trump, who had pledged to refill Guantanamo with “some bad dudes,” Defense Secretary Jim Mattis delivered a long-expected detentions policy to the White House Tuesday, a day after the deadline set by Trump’s January executive order paving the way for new Guantanamo detainees - and the subsequent poor performance on issues such as torture, endless detentions without trial, racism, discrimination, and looking backward not forward.
Little wonder the UN Human Rights Committee is not looking the other way. The rights group has issued a new report excoriating the US for its human rights violations. It focuses on violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the country is party.
The report mentions numerous human rights issues where the US is failing: Guantanamo, accountability for human rights violations, drone strikes, racism in the prison system, racial profiling, police violence, Muslim travel ban, and criminalization of refugees, mostly Muslim refugees.
According to the damning report, the US is still involved in serious human rights violations. In particular, the assessment measures US implementation of the committee's recommendations for improving its human rights record.
Far from it, the US performance has been poor, given ‘failing grade’. The failing grade suggests the US has a long way to go before it is in compliance with international law.
According to Fars News Agancy, it is shocking that after being given an entire year to address the UN concerns, the Trump White House refuses to act with a sense of urgency. It is utter disregard for the lives of Refugees the US helped to create in places like Syria and Yemen, or the people of color in policies, and in the daily actions of local law enforcement officials, who are positioned within the system to uphold these policies and the State's many systems of oppression.
With this new mandate, not only do those detainees lack rights to a fair trial, but they will continue to endure torture and abuse as the political class in America ignores the fact that most never committed any crimes against the United States…
In a nutshell, the UN report elevates the suffering inflicted by America’s domestic and foreign policies to the realm of international human rights: To be tortured, spied on, unjustly imprisoned, put in solitary confinement, indefinitely detained, extra judicially killed by the state, racially profiled, deprived of the right to live as refugee, and criminalized for being Muslim refugee is to have one's basic human rights violated and dignity as a human demolished.
The Trump regime should keep in mind that there are international laws to protect those rights - laws with which the US and every nation-state are bound to comply. Even as the US commonly condemns other countries for alleged human rights abuses, it has yet to clean its own act.
