Arbaeen Mourners in Nigeria

RNA - A witness said that police officers intercepted the Shiite mourners at the popular Lado overhead bridge along Zaria road in Kano metropolis, Cable.ng reported.

The policemen stopped them by firing teargas and live bullets.

According to local reports several people sustained injuries in the incident.

Musa Majia, spokesman of the Kano state police command, could not be reached for comments as he neither answered his calls nor responded to a text message sent.

Kano is among the states that have outlawed the activities of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN). Ibrahim Zakzaky, leader of the movement, has been in detention since December 2015 when his followers clashed with security forces.

Despite pressure from the group and some of its supporters, the government has refused to release Zakzaky.
