RNA - Al-Azhar scholars supported Ahmad Tayeb’s speeches at the conference on "A Way to Peace" and described the Sheikh’s plan on religious peace as the best way to resolve the crisis in Myanmar.

Al-Azhar clerics also criticized the Salafist positions in accusing Sheikh of Al-Azhar of silence regarding the killing of Muslims in Myanmar adding: “the visit of Sheikh al-Azhar to Myanmar would not solve the problem because one of the largest Muslim countries is in the vicinity of Myanmar, but failed to resolve the crisis in Myanmar.”

Sheikh Mohammed Shah’hat Al-Jandi, a member of the Islamic Research Council, noted during the meeting that al-Azhar has worked hard to protect and defend the Rohingya Muslims. “Al-Azhar scholars have also sent a letter to all Muslims around the world that has had a positive impact on the reduction of crimes against the Myanmar Muslims,” he added.

He also noted that al-Azhar is a scientific institution that does not have the capacity to do anything more than that. “Some expect al-Azhar to take up arms and go to war against the Buddhists,” he said, “while this is not what Al-Azhar's can do as a scientific and political source.”

"If al-Azhar does this, some people would claim that Muslims know only one language and that is war and massacre," said the member of the Al-Azhar Islamic Research Assembly.

Mohammad Ma’moun, assistant professor at Al-Azhar, also stated that the words of the al-Azhar scholar are considered as the final words for the international community. Ahmed Tayeb helped make the world aware of regional incidents and justify them to help Rohingya Muslims.”

"Putting an end to the crisis in Myanmar requires a global coalition to pressure the government of Myanmar to stop the crimes committed there," he said.
