Rasa - Canada's largest private-sector labor union with over than 310,000 members across the country, adopted a motion in support of a global movement calling for the boycott of Israel.

RNA - Unifor, a general trade union in Canada, passed pro-Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) motion at their recent convention in Winnipeg, from August 18-20, Al Waght reported.

 

BDS is a movement which works to end international support for Israeli oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.

 

The BDS was initiated in 2005 by over 170 Palestinian organizations and since then, thousands of volunteers worldwide have joined the BDS to help promote the Palestinian cause.

 

During its conventions in Winnipeg, Unifor issued Resolution No. 5  titled “Palestinian Self-Determination and the Movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions,” and reads in part.

 

The resolution vows that Unifor supports the use of divestment, boycott and sanctions (“BDS”) that are targeted to those sectors of Israel’s economy and society which profit from the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territoris.

 

The top Canadian trade union reiterated its support for BDS until such time as the Israeli implements a permanent ban on further settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territories.

 

Unifor has also voiced its support for the establishment of a truly sovereign Palestinian state while opposing all efforts to prohibit, punish or otherwise dete- Israel's economy could lose up to The Israeli regime is reportedly losing $10.5 billion per year as a result of the support expressed by supporters for BDS.
