RNA - According to al-Sumaria news website, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), also known as Hashd al-Sha’abi, said in a statement on Wednesday that its fighters took control of the city, which lies to the south of Mosul, after fierce clashes with the Daesh terrorists.

Iraqi forces launched an operation to liberate the city and its surrounding areas on Tuesday.

Hatra is home to a UNESCO World Heritage site of the same name that was destroyed by Daesh. The city lies in the northern province of Nineveh, of which Mosul is the capital.

Iraqi army soldiers and pro-government popular fighters have made sweeping gains against Takfiri elements since launching an operation to retake Mosul.

Iraqi forces took control of eastern Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting, and launched the battle in the west on February 19.
