RNA - "Leading the political process into a failure and hitting a blow at the results of the Astana meeting to destroy the ceasefire agreement in Syria is the US and the Zionist regime's goal in the current stage," Noufel told FNA on Wednesday.

He also said that the reliance of the Saudi-backed dissidents on field developments and terrorists' attacks will only lead to increased differences and obstacles to the way of the political settlement of crisis in Syria.

In relevant remarks on Tuesday, a senior Syrian legislator underlined that US President Donald Trump's proposal to create safe zones in Syria is a fruitless attempt to bolster Washington's role in the war-hit country.

"Trump's remarks about the creation of safe zones is a fruitless attempt to strengthen the US role in Syria after its weakened role in the Astana meeting (between the Syrian government and the opposition groups) while he would be better off if he rendered support to the Syrian army and legitimate government as the most important power in fighting against the Takfiri terrorism, specially the ISIL and al-Nusra (Fatah al-Sham) Front," Mojib al-Rahman al-Dandan told FNA.

He underlined that Syria welcomes efforts by any country or party, excluding Israel, to fight against terrorism in the country in coordination with the Syrian government.

Al-Dandan expressed optimism about Syria's victory against terrorism and purging all regions from terrorists, and said the international community should also help Damascus to this end by pressuring the regional sides to close their borders to the militants and stop sending them aid.

His remarks came after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad rejected the idea advanced by Trump of creating safe zones.

"Safe zones for the Syrians could only happen when you have stability and security, where you don't have terrorists, where you don't have flow and support of those terrorists by the neighboring countries or by Western countries... It's much more viable, much more practical and less costly to have stability than to create safe zones. It's not a realistic idea at all," Assad told Yahoo News in an interview published Friday by state-run SANA.
