Rasa - A 16-year-old boy has been charged with causing almost £6.1million damage to western Europe’s biggest mosque complex.

RNA - He allegedly started a fire in administration buildings attached to Baitul Futuh Mosque in Morden,  on September 26 2015.

 

The blaze tore through function halls, offices, and apartments buildings, causing extensive damage, but the mosque itself was left unscathed.

 

The teenager, from Walton-on-Thames, is set to appear at a South London youth court later this month accused of arson and arson with intent to endanger life.

 

A second 16-year-old was released with no further action.

 

A Met spokesman said: “Officers were called at around 12.20pm on September 26, 2015 to reports of a fire at an ancillary building adjacent to a mosque in London Road, Morden.

 

“The London Fire Brigade also attended and dealt with the blaze.”

 

One man in his 40s was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

 

Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters attended the scene.
