RNA - “An end to the conflicts in Syria should be conditioned on eradication of Takfiri and terrorist groups,” Chairman of the Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said at a press conference in Damascus on Thursday.
Noting that the Arab country is at the frontline of resistance against the Zionist regime of Israel, he said that the United States, in coordination with Israel, has sent thousands of terrorists to Syria to deal a blow to the Resistance Front.
The senior Iranian lawmaker, who is visiting Damascus at the head of a parliamentary delegation, further reiterated Iran’s support for the independence and sovereignty of Syria.
Iran is against any country’s interference and presence in Syria without the consent of the Damascus government, he went on to say.
On Wednesday, Boroujerdi held talks with senior Syrian officials, including President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem and Parliament Speaker Hadiya Khalaf Abbas, on a variety of issues such as bilateral relations and the developments in Syria.
Assad, in his meeting with the Iranian delegation, appreciated the Islamic Republic’s support for the Arab country, saying Iran and all other states that sided with the Syrian nation are partners in the achievements made against terrorists.
Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups currently controlling parts of it.
According to a report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.
In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of Syria and supports its legitimate government in the face of foreign-backed militancy.
Tehran insists that the Syrian nation is the only side that has the right to shape the future of its own country, rejecting foreign intervention with the use of force.
