RNA – In a statement, Ayatollah Abdul-Amir Qabalan, the deputy head of the Higher Islamic Shi’ite Council of Lebanon, congratulated the Lebanese people on the election of Michel Aoun as the president of Lebanon and wished Aoun success in leading the nation.

Lebanon had been without a president for over two years amid political bickering in the parliament.

The senior Lebanese cleric added that with the election of Aoun, a strong Hezbollah ally, as the president of Lebanon on Monday, “the ship has reached the shore of safety, stability and prosperity.”

He said that this new era should be full of goodness for the Lebanese people and the President Aoun must establish a state of law and institutions based on providing a generous life for all citizens as soon as possible and avoid any sectarian, political or regional thinking.

Ayatollah Qabalan added that the Lebanese people call for a new era and a base to strengthen the foundations of the social state where the citizens are equal in rights and duties which requires that the parliament approve an proportional electoral law in order to eliminate sectarian disputes and constraints and political injustice in the country.

His Eminence addressed President Aoun and called on him to help all Lebanese, especially the poor and disadvantaged, to support national unity and peaceful coexistence, to cooperate with all political groups, to satisfy the people’s needs, to provide for future generations and maintain the equation of the army, people and resistance against the terrorism of the Zionist regime and Takfiri phenomenon.

After the election, Aoun vowed in a speech to the parliament that he would spare no effort in trying to bring about the liberation of Lebanese territories occupied by Israel.
