Iraqi Voluntary Forces Save Stranded Civilians on Road to Tikrit

RNA - In a mail to Tasnim, a member of the Iraqi voluntary forces, known as the Popular Mobilization Units or Hashid al-Shaabi, sent images of the accidental encounter with the civilians who were fleeing on foot from al-Shirqat city to Tikrit.

The predominantly Sunni town of al-Shirqat, located north of Salahudin Province, fell to Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group during its offensive against Iraq in June 2014.

According to the report, the squad of voluntary forces were on a military mission, driving along the road from Tikrit to al-Shirqat, when they saw the exhausted civilians coming in the opposite direction.

Iraq has been facing the growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh terrorist group.

Daesh militants made advances in northern and western Iraq over the summer of 2014, after capturing swaths of northern Syria.

Meanwhile, a combination of concentrated attacks by the Iraqi Army and the Hashid al-Shaabi forces, who rushed to take arms to defend their country, have blunted the edge of Daesh offensive.

The voluntary forces have had an outstanding role in the liberation of many terrorist-held areas.
