RNA – In an interview with Rasa News Agency, Musayyib al-Nu’aymi, the editor of Iran’s Arabic-language newspaper, al-Wefaq, discussed the causes of Friday night’s attempted coup against Turkish President Erdoğan saying that the events of the past few days which have been introduced as a coup d’état in Turkey have been caused by a series of various factors that have been accumulating over the last few years, although this military coup itself is not acceptable in today’s world and is not conventional.

“Apparently, there are a large number of members of the Turkish armed forces, many of whom are prominent officers, who are dissatisfied with the policies of the current government in the country. This has been one of the main causes of the coup,” he said.

He added that still, neither Turks nor the other parties have faced the main reason for the coup and only made hurried decisions, such as arresting thousands of people and the dismissal of three thousand judges in one day, which indicates that Turkey’s leaders are seeking revenge more than seeking the truth.

Al-Nu’aymi said that the coup leaders were not initially looking to overthrow the government but Erdoğan government’s performance in recent years has been one of the reasons for their actions. He said that certainly, other issues played a role in the coup and the coup leaders themselves count the decline of Erdoğan’s relationship with Israel and their belief that the Erdoğan’s government has the country into many crises as reasons for their coup.

“The group also believe that these policies led to a weakening of the Turkish economy and the country’s international standing. Therefore, we cannot present a single reason as the motivating factor for this coup,” he said.

Al-Nu’aymi explained that in the statements released by the United States and other Western governments, they have not shown any support for Erdoğan. They merely condemned the coup, supported the people’s choices and did not state that they support the Erdoğan government which adds to the doubts surrounding this failed coup.
