This compared to 53 per cent who said they were not religious and 13 per cent who are ‘convinced atheists’, with the remaining Britons saying they ‘did not know’.
The least religious country was found to be China, where only 6% of people say are they are religious with 61% being confirmed atheists.
Other countries at the bottom of the list included Japan, Sweden, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Hong Kong.
The poll questioned 63,898 people - around 1,000 in each country - at the end of last year.
