Rasa News Agency reports – Ayatollah Mohammad-Ali Alavi-Gorgani, a renowned professor in the Holy Seminary of Qom, has met with the president and officials of Qom University of Applied Science and Technology, where he advised that they give more attention to the gender segregation at the university and expressed concern over Iran’s alarmingly high divorce rate.

Ayatollah Alavi-Gorgani emphasized that the enemy seeks to profit from gender mixing in Iranian society, saying that when we speak of gender segregation in society, the enemies try to propagate it as something to be feared and somehow think that by our encouragement of gender segregation, we encourage our young women to stay home. “God wants us to preserve our chastity and honour in society, so why shouldn’t we implement gender segregation when it is something good and pleasing to God?” he asked.

The seminary professor expressed concern over the growing divorce rate in Iran. Some government statistics state that more than one in five marriages ended in divorce last year. Ayatollah Alavi-Gorgani stated that in the past married couples would endure tribulations of life together, but this was no longer the case. He also added that some imagine that a liberal relationship between males and female is better for society, but he stressed this is the reason why the divorce rate has increased: “When young men and women in our society mix together and later want to form a family, many problems may appear and divorce is more likely. This is the currently the case in our country.”

He also advised that men and women should enter fields of employment which are suitable for their personalities, saying that some use the ridiculous excuse that women have fewer rights as a reason to hire women to a job which is not pertinent to their position. Ayatollah Alavi-Gorgani emphasized that it is the duty of all those in the Islamic community, including the experts, government authorities, the sources of emulation and the scholars to help solve the people’s problems and to never say “we can’t!”

He concluded his speech saying: “God supports those who seek to reform society. We should all be doing our best to serve people.”
