RNA - "There are 4,000 political inmates in Bahrain and the Bahraini jails have turned into a place to savagely torture and suppress the prisoners," Abdol Hossein al-Quraifi told FNA on Wednesday.

"Based on creditable reports, many of the datainees are beaten, given electric shocks, and are deprived of treatment and medical aid," he added.

Noting that the fate of Bahraini political activists is unclear in al-Khalifa jails and they are everyday fighting for their life, al-Quraifi said, "No Bahraini official accounts for the country's violation of human rights and they don’t care for the international organizations' criticisms."

In relevant remarks, prominent Bahraini rights activist, Nabeel Rajab, sentenced to many years in jail for campaigning against the ruling authorities and their Saudi allies, wrote in a letter in New York Times on September 4 that "there are some 4,000 political prisoners in Bahrain, which has the highest prison population per capita in the Middle East. This is a country that has subjected its people to imprisonment, torture and even death for daring to desire democracy. My close colleague Abdulhadi al-Khawaja was tortured and sentenced to life in prison in 2011 for his human rights work".

"No one has been properly held to account for systematic abuses that have affected thousands," he added in a detailed letter about his situation in al-Khalifa jail.

The Manama regime has been cracking down harshly on anti-regime protests since February 14, 2011.

Troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, themselves repressive Arab regimes, were deployed to the country in March that year to assist the Manama government in its crackdown on peaceful and pro-democracy rallies.

Scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others injured or arrested in Manama’s crackdown on the anti-regime activists.
