RNA – On the third anniversary of the arrest of Hujjat al-Islam Hasan Isa, a former member of parliament in the tiny Persian Gulf country of Bahrain, the al-Wefaq National Islamic Society called for the immediate and unconditional release of this political activist and all prisoners in a statement released on August 18.

Bahrain’s main Shi’ah opposition group stated that the Al Khalifah regime’s behaviour was not in accordance with the law and added, “By arresting and detaining scholars and politicians, the Al Khalifah regime has engaged in political revenge against them.”

They stated, “Before 2011 and before the start of the Bahraini Revolution, Hujjat al-Islam Isa won more than 93% of the vote and was active in the areas of social justice, human rights and the defence of dignity and democracy. All the accusations against him are politically motivated.”

al-Wefaq National Islamic Society stressed that all activities of Hujjat al-Islam Isa were peaceful and the arrest of such a person indicates the ineffectiveness and inactivity of the Bahraini government and gives attention to the direct struggle with the people and political activists and demonstrates the extent of the gulf between the people and the authorities.

They insisted that the laws issued by the courts of the Al Khalifah are unfair and political and that through this law, the Bahraini government is seeking to stand against the political will of the people but cannot stop their legitimate demands.

On March 29, 2017, a Bahrain court sentenced Hujjat al-Islam Isa to ten years in prison.

The prominent Bahraini cleric has been in solitary confinement for more than 700 days by the Al Khalifah regime.

The Bahraini tribunal has previously accused him of supporting and supporting a “terrorist group” which allegedly killed two policemen and injured 66 others in an operation in the village of Sitrah on July 28, 2015.

Hujjat al-Islam Isa was arrested in August 2015 by the Al Khalifah regime and was denied access to family, lawyer and treatment.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011.

They are demanding that the Al Khalifah regime relinquish power and allow a just system representing all Bahrainis to be established.
