US President Donald “Trump and his Zionist masters simply want to destroy Iran in any way they can,” says J. Michael Springmann, a former US diplomat in Saudi Arabia.

RNA - Since the coronavirus outbreak in Iran last month, the Trump administration has imposed several rounds of illegal sanctions against the country despite an international outcry that such moves would hamper the Islamic Republic’s fight against the contagious disease.

“Well, in my view the politicians and the Congress who are criticizing Trump's handling of the sanctions against Iran during the coronavirus events are likely to fall on deaf ears,” Springmann told Press TV on Thursday.

“Trump and his Zionist masters simply want to destroy Iran in any way they can, if they can do it by sanctions on oil, sanctions on metal exports, if they can do it by limiting Iran's access to the international banking system, that's fine with them,” he added.

“And if they can prevent Iran from getting necessary medical supplies to fight the virus, that's all the better, they hope it kills more Iranians; it supposedly -- in their view -- will destabilize the Iranian government,” he noted.

“And Trump has not had any real criticism against his treatment of Iran. It's sporadic Congressmen, it's sporadic people from the United Nations, it's the occasional complaint coming out of Europe about what Trump is doing,” he said.

“And by and large Trump and these people are ignoring them just as they ignored complaints about his support of the Saudi government's war against the Yemeni people and their government, because the Saudis wanting to and because the Saudis like to buy American weapons and it's good for Trump in the bottom line of his corporate sponsors,” he said.

“So I think that people can talk, people can complain, but Trump is going to ignore them because he sees more advantages in trying to destroy Iran, then trying to help the people in the government there,” he concluded.

Trump reinstated Washington's sanctions on Iran in May 2018 after he unilaterally left the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed between Iran and major world powers.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) — known as the World Court — has ordered the White House to lift the sanctions it has illegally re-imposed on humanitarian supplies to Iran.

The US claims the bans do not get in the way of food and medicine exports to Iran, but the Islamic Republic says Washington has been working to hamper a Swiss humanitarian channel launched to enable the transfer of commodities to Iran.
