An American political analyst believes that the presidency of Donald Trump has taken the masks off US imperialistic policies.

RNA - “The Trump presidency really takes the masks off US imperialism and resource piracy and lets everyone see what the US government is really like,” Charles Dunaway told Press TV on Thursday.

“That arrogance and that imperialism has been there all along, but with Trump it’s much harder to hide.”

He went on to say that “Trump is now keeping US partners in line with threats rather than with the veneer of diplomacy as his predecessors did.”

Trump currently faces impeachment trial over charges, including abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. He is accused of pressuring Ukraine to investigate former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, a political rival, and then impeding the inquiry into the matter.

“Regardless of the outcome of the impeachment trial, we cannot really expect US foreign policy to change, it may become a little kinder and gentler on the surface, but the underlying policies will remain exactly the same,” Dunaway said.

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday shows that about 44 percent of adults say Congress should convict Trump and remove him, another 15 percent say he should be reprimanded formally with a congressional censure. Some 31 percent said the charges should be dismissed.

Dunaway said, “Although the polling is now showing a slim majority for removal probably because of the television ratings, less than 8 percent of Republicans are calling for the removal of president Trump from office, so that’s a tremendous party line split among American voters.”

About 72 percent in the survey said that the Senate impeachment trial “should allow witnesses with firsthand knowledge of the impeachment charges to testify,” including US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former national security adviser John Bolton.

Trump so far has rejected the requests by Democrats to turn over documents related to the administration’s activities in Ukraine last year. He has also urged officials like Bolton and Pompeo not to participate.
