The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in a statement vowed to support the revolution's ideals and values and pursue the Supreme Leader's guidelines in a bid to achieve prosperity and development for the country and the Iranian nation.

RNA - "After lapse of four decades since the victory of the Islamic Revolution and establishing the Islamic Republic in Iran, it can definitely be said that the Islamic Revolution, in accordance with its goals, aspirations and demands, has challenged the nature of the global arrogance and disrupted the order of despotic powers and Zionism, specially in West Asia and the Persian Gulf," the IRGC's statement said.

The IRGC statement was released on Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of a historic referendum in which Iranian voters overwhelmingly endorsed the establishment of the Islamic Republic following the fall of the US-backed Pahlavi regime.

The statement, meantime, pointed to the recent remarks by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on not yielding to the enemies' threats, and said, "Following the Leader’s guidelines is necessary for development and reaching the ideals of the Islamic Revolution."

It noted that the Supreme Leader's guidelines on entering the second phase of the revolution will guarantee reaching prosperity and development.

Iranians on Monday marked the 40th anniversary of the historic referendum in which they overwhelmingly voted for the establishment of the Islamic Republic following the collapse of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in 1979.

In a landmark two-day referendum held on March 30-31, 1979, less than two months after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, over 98.2 percent of eligible Iranians voted for the establishment of an Islamic Republic in the country.

As a result, on April 1, 1979, Iran was declared an Islamic Republic, and was given a new official name - the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In a special statement at the time, the Supervisory Board of the country said the event was "crucial for Iran and the entire world as it opened a new chapter in the history of our country and in the history of Islam".

The Islamic Republic was established in line with the popular motto of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that called for “Independence, Freedom and the Islamic Republic” for the country.

Since then, the Iranian nation annually celebrates Farvardin 12 on the solar calendar year, which falls on April 1 in normal years and March 31 in leap years, as the anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The day is referred to as the Islamic Republic Day.

The Islamic Revolution, led by late Imam Khomeini, established a new political system based on Islamic values and democracy.

Iran marks Islamic Republic Day on Farvardin 12 on the solar calendar, which falls on April 1 this year.
