RNA – Following the placing of the bill on the “Accession of Iran to the Financial Action Task ‎Force (FATF)” on the agenda of the Islamic Consultative Assembly on October 7th, the ‎Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom wrote a letter in which they called on the chairman, Ali ‎Larijani, and the representatives of the Islamic Consultative Assembly to take the guidelines ‎of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei, and other ‎high-ranking officials of the Islamic Republic into account and not to take any action which ‎harms the country and the Islamic system of government in the Islamic Consultative ‎Assembly by ratifying this convention.‎

Iran entered into talks with the G7-created FATF to join the body following the January 2016 ‎implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear deal ‎between Tehran and the P5+1 group of countries.‎

On June 30, the FATF said Iran had until October to complete reforms that would “bring it ‎into line with global norms or face consequences.”‎

The text of this aforementioned letter, which was signed by the head of the Supreme Council ‎of the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom, Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, is as follows:‎

In the Name of God, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful ‎

Mr. Ali Larijani, chairman of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, and the representatives of ‎the Islamic Consultative Assembly ‎

With peace and respect, we remind you:‎

In regard to the guidance and directives of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution ‎and the other great sources of emulation in Qom and the concerns of the members of the ‎Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom who, apart from the meeting we held, another full ‎meeting to consider the positive and negative effects of that [vote] which is scheduled for ‎Sunday, October 7, 2018.

We would like to remind you that action must not be taken which is subject to opposition by ‎the aforementioned authorities, is harmful to the country and the system of governance of ‎the Islamic Republic and is considered as a weak point in the history of the country.‎

Mohammad Yazdi ‎
Head of the Supreme Council of the Society of Seminary Teachers of Qom
