President Donald Trump mocked the idea he might be impeached by the Democratic House, claiming he is innocent of accusations against him and has been a successful president.

RNA - "I greatly appreciate Nancy Pelosi’s statement against impeachment, but everyone must remember the minor fact that I never did anything wrong," Trump tweeted, referring to recent comments by the house speaker that impeachment at this point would be too divisive for the country, USA Today reported.

Other critics of Trump disagree, saying the president's alleged abuse of power warrants an impeachment inquiry.

Citing the economy, Trump bragged about his administration and stated that "how do you impeach a man who is considered by many to be the President with the most successful first two years in history, especially when he has done nothing wrong and impeachment is for 'high crimes and misdemeanors'?"

Trump decried impeachment as he and lawmakers in Washington await a report from Special Counsel Robert Mueller on his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mueller's investigation has led to convictions or guilty pleas from Trump's former campaign chairman, ex-national security adviser, and other Trump associates.

In addition, federal prosecutors in New York are investigating the president in connection with a scheme to evade campaign finance laws using hush money payments to women who claim to have had affairs with the president.

Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, discussed the hush money plan in his testimony before Congress two weeks ago.

House committees have opened their own investigations of Trump on a variety of fronts, from his handling of security clearances to his financial dealings.

While some House Democrats said their investigations could lead to impeachment, others like Pelosi have thrown cold water on the idea, though Pelosi also appeared to leave the door open depending on future events.

"Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country," Pelosi told The Washington Post, adding, "And he’s just not worth it."
