Rasa - As criticisms are growing against Nigeria in what many see as the systematic suppression of the Muslims in the country, a top commentator has said that the world should do more to pressure Abuja to stop its persecution of the Muslims, particularly followers of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

RNA - “They are trying to suppress the Movement,” said Abayomi Azikiwe, the editor of the Pan-African News Wire. “They may be attempting to cover up these crimes, but it is just making it worse utilizing this type of repression against the peaceful movement.”

The analyst also called on international community to force the Nigerian government and army to stop killing and persecuting the Muslims in the African country.

“This is totally unjustified and I think it should be raised in the international community that the Nigerian government should halt its persecution against this movement.”

According to Press TV, Nigeria’s crackdown on IMN followers began in December 2015, when the army attacked a religious ceremony in the city of Zaria in northern Nigeria. Nigerian forces later raided the house of IMN Leader Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky and arrested him after killing those attempting to protect him.

Rights groups have accused Nigeria's military of killing more than 300 IMN supporters and burying them in mass graves during the 2015 conflict, a charge the military  denies.
